Te Mana o te Taiao - Aotearoa New Zealand Biodiversity Strategy 2020-2050 sets New Zealand’s strategic direction for the biodiversity system until 2050; providing a framework to optimise, deliver and measure the outcomes of investment in nature. With an emphasis on an ‘all-of-New Zealand’ effort, it covers all aspects of the environment, all ecological domains and all types of tenure including public and private land, collectively-owned Māori (New Zealand’s indigenous peoples) land, freshwater and the marine environment. 

New Zealand’s national biodiversity strategy and action plan is designed for all New Zealanders to own and implement. It guides and enables whānau (extended family group), hapū (subtribe made up of multiple whānau) and iwi (indigenous nation/tribe made up of multiple hapū), central and local government, communities, organisations and businesses, researchers and landowners to all be involved in the protection and restoration of biodiversity.

New Zealand’s national biodiversity strategy was finalised in 2020, for the 2020-2050 period. The goals in the strategy, and associated national targets, are intended to address many of the issues and opportunities for biodiversity conservation and sustainable use identified in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.  Action for Nature, the second implementation plan, sets out New Zealand's national targets and the critical actions and programmes for their delivery to 2030.
