GBF-G-A. Ecosystems are conserved, extinctions are halted and genetic diversity is maintained
Elements of the global targets

Elements of GBF Goal A covered: Dominica’s national targets address most elements of GBF Goal A. Ecosystem integrity, connectivity and resilience are addressed through integrated land/sea-use planning, restoration of degraded terrestrial, freshwater, coastal and marine ecosystems, 30x30 protected areas/OECMs, pollution reduction, invasive alien species control, climate–biodiversity action, sustainable production sectors, ecosystem service planning, and urban green/blue spaces. Human induced extinction, threatened/endemic species conservation, and genetic diversity are directly addressed by National Target 4 and supported by targets on protected areas, sustainable harvest and trade, invasive species, pollution, climate refugia, capacity building, finance, and biodiversity information systems. Inclusive governance and gender-responsive implementation support equitable delivery of these outcomes.

A.2 Extent of natural ecosystems

Yes

Partial reference data are available, mainly for forest cover. The relevant national reference period is 2015, with 2010–2015 used for forest cover trend information based on the 2015 Forest Resources Assessment. Later satellite-based forest/tree cover change data are also available through Global Forest Watch and may be used as supplementary proxy information for tracking forest cover trends after 2015. However, these data do not yet constitute a complete national ecosystem account for all natural and semi-natural terrestrial, freshwater, coastal, and marine ecosystems, and Global Forest Watch tree cover data should be interpreted as forest/tree-cover proxy data rather than a full measure of all natural ecosystems.

A.3 Red List Index

Yes
EN

The available reference period is 1993–2024 based on the global Red List Index dataset for Dominica, with the GBF-relevant post-2020 reference period being 2020–2024. Dominica’s 6NR reported Red List Index / species survival information for 2010–2018, but updated global data are now available through 2024 from the BirdLife International/IUCN Red List Index dataset, as disseminated through Our World in Data and Target Tracker. The latest reported value for Dominica is approximately 0.69 in 2024. These data should be interpreted as the globally derived country-level Red List Index, not as a nationally produced Red List assessment. Reference: https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/red-list-index
