National Targets A, B, C, F and I collectively address the generation, consolidation and availability of biodiversity data and scientific knowledge. Planned actions include developing research databases, taxonomic tools, field guides and atlases; mapping habitats and species distributions; establishing monitoring systems for protected areas, habitats and species; updating national Red Lists; and developing inventories, risk assessments and publicly accessible information on invasive alien species. Institutional arrangements for consolidating publicly funded project results and support for scientific research and technology transfer further contribute to strengthening the knowledge base for conservation planning and decision-making.

Coverage is strongest for scientific research, monitoring and technical information. These targets do not explicitly ensure that all relevant biodiversity information is accessible to decision-makers, practitioners and the public in appropriate and usable formats. They also do not expressly address safeguards for accessing traditional knowledge with the free, prior and informed consent of its holders.
