The revised Regulation on new environmental economic accounts aims to update the common framework for the collection, compilation, transmission and evaluation of European environmental economic accounts. It includes a new module on ecosystem accounts, which present data on the extent and condition of ecosystem assets and the services they provide to society and the economy. The data are in line with the SEEA Ecosystem Accounting.

WAVES: From 2014 to 2022 the Commission supported the World Bank led WAVES (Wealth Accounting and the Valuation of Ecosystem Services) and WAVES+ project- a global partnership that promotes the use of natural capital accounting in national planning. The programme supported the production of environmental accounts and the integration of findings into policy decisions in several non-EU countries The World Bank is continuing the work under its Global Program on Sustainability (GPS).

As part of the EU initiative on Business and Biodiversity, the EU is promoting natural capital accounting, which has the potential to provide a concrete basis for business performance reporting by explicitly mapping out impacts and/or dependencies on natural resources and placing monetary value on them.
