Jordan’s national targets address several core components of GBF Target 7, particularly those related to reducing pollution risks, controlling hazardous chemicals, and promoting sustainable and biodiversity-friendly agriculture. National targets aim to decrease the impacts of pollution on biodiversity and ecosystem health, reduce hazardous chemical use, and promote sustainable agricultural practices that lower nutrient and pesticide pressures. These elements directly reduce pollution-driven biodiversity loss, in line with GBF Target 7.
However, several critical elements of the global target remain insufficiently addressed. The national targets do not specify quantitative reductions in nutrient runoff, nitrogen and phosphorus losses, pesticide volumes, or pesticide risk, as outlined in GBF Target 7. There is also no national commitment to halve the overall risk posed by pesticides and highly hazardous chemicals, nor are there targets addressing plastic pollution or chemical pollution thresholds. These gaps mean that Jordan’s national targets only partially reflect the full scope and ambition of GBF Target 7.
