Jordan’s national targets address several important elements of GBF Target 2, particularly those related to restoring degraded ecosystems, enhancing ecological connectivity, and promoting ecosystem-based resilience for human well-being. National targets that prioritize nature-based solutions, the ecological restoration of degraded lands, and integrated spatial planning contribute directly to the objectives of GBF Target 2 by improving ecosystem function, reducing fragmentation, and increasing ecosystems' capacity to support biodiversity and climate resilience.
However, several core elements of GBF Target 2 are not yet covered or are only partially addressed. Current national targets do not include quantitative restoration commitments consistent with the GBF benchmark of restoring at least 30% of degraded ecosystems by 2030. No measurable national baseline for degraded ecosystems has been established, and there are no specific targets for the types, locations, or ecological outcomes of restoration activities. Additionally, national targets do not explicitly address restoration that enhances ecosystem services, carbon sequestration, or climate mitigation outcomes, as highlighted under GBF Target 2. These gaps will require further development through the national monitoring framework and upcoming ecosystem assessments.
