Jordan’s national targets address several core components of GBF Target 16, particularly those related to enabling sustainable consumption patterns and promoting a transition toward a circular economy. The national target to advance sustainable consumption and the circular economy for waste reduction contributes to the global objective of reducing the environmental footprint of consumption, lowering waste generation, and encouraging more efficient and responsible resource use. These efforts support national progress toward reducing pressures on biodiversity from unsustainable consumption and waste.
However, several critical elements of the global target remain insufficiently addressed. The national targets do not specify quantitative reductions in food waste, nor do they include measures to halve food waste at retail and consumer levels, as outlined in GBF Target 16. There are also no explicit commitments to reduce the material or consumption footprint, nor are there indicators addressing sustainability standards, consumer awareness programs, or large-scale behavioural shifts. These gaps mean that Jordan’s national target only partially reflects the full scope and ambition of GBF Target 16.
