Reduce Pollution to Levels that are not Harmful to Biodiversity

Description

Reduce pollution risks and the negative impact of pollution from all sources to levels that are not harmful to humans, biodiversity and ecosystem functions and services, taking into account food security and livelihoods.

Please outline the main policy measures or actions that will be taken to achieve this national target.

Review and strengthen regulations on domestic, industrial and agricultural pollution
Strengthen capacity and enhance coordination in the enforcement of environmental regulations
Promote and strengthen waste management programs
Promote circular economy principles
Enhance monitoring of water, soil, and air pollution levels.
Strengthen and implement programs to reduce hazardous chemical use in all sectors of the economy, particularly in the agriculture and mining sectors
Encourage environmentally-friendly practices in other economic sectors
Develop and implement a Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) programme on waste and pollution management

These considerations were taken into account through a participatory and consultative process. The process involved an inception workshop, a series of stakeholder consultations, technical working group meetings, and validation workshops. The process was coordinated by the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Wildlife (MECW), through the Department of Wildlife and Forestry Resources Management.

Global Goal A – Ecosystem Integrity and Resilience

Addresses pollution as a key direct driver of biodiversity loss by reducing contamination from domestic, industrial, agricultural, and urban sources.
Supports restoration of ecosystem integrity through monitoring and reduction of pollutants in water, soil, and air, leading to recovery of degraded terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
Strengthens ecosystem resilience by promoting pollution thresholds that safeguard ecological functions and biodiversity health.

Protects human health, livelihoods, and ecosystem services by reducing pollution to levels that are not harmful to biodiversity or people.
