Elements of GBF Target 6 covered: Dominica’s National Target 6 addresses the main elements of GBF Target 6 by committing to reduce new introductions and establishment of priority invasive alien species by at least 50%, identify pathways, and control or eradicate priority IAS on land, in watersheds and in marine sites. It is highly relevant to Dominica’s island context, where IAS affect native species, agriculture, forests, freshwater systems and marine ecosystems.
Dominica does not currently have a validated national reference period or complete national time-series dataset for Indicator 6.1, “Rate of invasive alien species establishment.” A validated GRIIS checklist for Dominica is available and can serve as an important baseline source for introduced and invasive alien species. In addition, selected recent establishment records are available from national reporting, including post-Hurricane Maria records of species such as the Cuban tree frog and common green iguana. These data could support a provisional or minimum estimate of recent IAS establishment rates. However, they are not sufficient to calculate a complete, validated national rate because first-record dates, introduction dates, establishment status, pathways, and confidence levels are not consistently available for all introduced and invasive alien species. Future reporting should update the GRIIS checklist, compile first-record or introduction dates, confirm establishment status, identify introduction and spread pathways, and establish a national reference period, such as 2020–2030, for tracking new IAS establishments over time.
